To be in the middle of middle-age, to turn 50 in 2022, is to be born in 1972 (Boullet was born in 69).
Being currently middle-age means having come of age in the late 20th century as part of Generation X. A time now heralded for its punk scene, its various undergrounds, and due to globalization decimating the economies of industrial cities in the West, plentiful cheap rent. None of these, unsurprisingly, were heralded in their time. But it was the cheap rent that made everything else possible.
All that now sounds like a long time ago; middle age brings nostalgia.
2nd Cannons Zine – Victor Boullet is a wandering set of 5 zines centralised around a portrait of Victor Boullet during his time in Liverpool from 2014-2021, historically the time between the 2008 financial crisis and Covid-19 Pandemic. It follows Boullet’s home life and daily walk to his studio in Toxteth, far away from the era’s gentrification of cities like Los Angeles and Paris (and equally far away from their respective art fairs). The zines are authored by 2nd Cannons, with Victor’s only participation being the access he gave to his personal photo library. However, It’s worth noting that Boullet inadvertently birthed the entity 2nd Cannons Zine simply by writing the phrase in his invitational email.
